What began as a weekly hunger strike in Qezel Hesar Prison has become a persistent, decentralized act of resistance against the death penalty.
In January 2024, prisoners on death row began refusing food every Tuesday and publicly calling for intervention to halt executions. The action drew solidarity from other prisoners, human-rights defenders, families, and communities beyond Iran.
By the campaign’s 139th week, a campaign statement reported participation across 64 prisons. The number is reported by the campaign and linked below for transparency.

On 28 September 2026, UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato issued an urgent appeal for an immediate official moratorium on all executions in Iran — "more urgent than ever" — pending full abolition. She announced she will publish details of individual cases daily until 10 October, the World Day Against the Death Penalty: political protesters, drug-offence convicts, and those sentenced under qisas.What we demand
